What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia, is a common medical condition in which a man’s breasts become enlarged or over-developed. It is characterized by an excess of glandular tissue development, excess fat, and/or skin in one or both breasts. Although there is no precise cause known for this condition, there are many factors that potentially contribute to this condition, including:
• Weight loss or gain
• Hormonal changes
• Heredity
• Use of prescription drugs
• Liver malfunction
• Anabolic steroid use
• Etc.
For the majority of men, diet and exercise are not effective treatments for Gynecomastia. Those living with Gynecomastia often suffer from low self-esteem and feelings of discomfort and embarrassment during certain social and intimate activities.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has classified gynecomastia into 4 different grades based off of the following criteria:
- Size of breast tissue development
- Severity of the condition
- Feminization of the breast
