Hair loss in men
There are many factors that can contribute to hair thinning or hair loss. Stress for example can have a major effect on hair loss. Cortisol, the hormone produced when the body is under stress, can disrupt the hair growth cycle. This can cause hair growth to shorten or stop completely.
Other factors like medications, medical conditions, and/or diet can influence hair loss. However, genetics is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Male pattern baldness, a form of androgenetic alopecia, is hereditary and accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. While age is an important factor as well, around 25% men who inherit the male pattern baldness gene will begin to see thinning hair before the age of 21. By about 50 years old approximately 85% of men will have some obvious form of thinning hair or hair loss.
Hair Restoration Options
There are many types of male hair loss. Thus there are many types of hair loss solutions. In the case of thinning hair, medication can help slow down the process. Medications like finasteride and minoxidil are often recommended and can help reduce hair loss in 85% of people. However, when someone is dealing with bald spots or a hairline that has already receded, medication often falls short of the task to restore hair. Numerous hair restoration and hair replacement options have been on the market for ages. The strip method technique or follicular unit transplantation (FUT) has been used for years. However recovery can be very painful and slow. This technique also comes with a higher risk of infection, as well as visible scars in the back of the scalp from the transplantation incision.
How the Hair Cycle Works
There are three stages in the human hair growth cycle: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Our hair grows an average of about 6 inches per year but we also lose a lot of hair to the natural process of shedding. Furthermore, the human hair growth cycle is irregular. Different numbers of hairs are simultaneously going through any one of these stages at any given time. The stages are explained as follows:
- Anagen
Anagen is the active or “growing” phase of the cycle when the cells in the root of the hair divide at a rapid rate. Hair grows approximately 1cm a month and can stay in this active phase of growth from anywhere between two and seven years. People who feel like their hair does not grow past a certain length have a shorter anagen phase than other’s whose hair grows longer. - Catagen
The catagen stage is the transitional part of the cycle and only lasts for around two to three weeks. Approximately 3% of all hairs are in this stage at any given moment. In this stage hair growth stops and the outer root sheath shrinks and attaches to the root of the hair. This forms a “club hair”, which is basically a hair that has stopped growing and is no longer in the active stage. - Telogen
Telogen is the resting phase in the hair growth cycle when the hair follicle is completely inactive. Normally 6% to 8% of all hairs are in this stage, which tends to last about 100 days on the scalp.
Why Does Hair Loss Occur?
We shed on average between 25 to 100 hairs a day. Since other hair is also in the growth stage at the same time (about 100 anagen hairs grow everyday) this amount of shedding usually goes unnoticed. However, when the growth/shedding cycle is disrupted then hair loss becomes more obvious. It can also happen if a hair follicle is damaged and scar tissue grows in its place.

Hair loss in women

Many factors can contribute to hair loss in women. Some of which include, scarring from surgery, alopecia conditions, medication, the birth control pill, childbirth and cancer treatment. The Elite Hair Graft Experience

The first step is an initial consultation with a trained hair restoration expert. The provider will ask about your medical history and perform a scalp evaluation before outlining a recommended strategic plan. Instructions on what to do to get prepared for the day of the procedure will be given to you. Typically, most physicians will start the procedure early in the morning. The Actual Procedure
Upon arrival you will be escorted to a private room where the procedure will take place. Once you are seated and comfortable, your physician will explain each step of the procedure once more and get your approval before starting.
In most cases a mild sedative can be given to help you relax. You will need to consult with your provider to see if this is an option and make arrangements for transportation home. Next, someone will shave a small area at the back of your head.
The area where the hair is to be implanted will be prepped and local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area. While your scalp is anesthetized, a suction device will be used to gently remove the grafts from the donor area. These grafts are immediately collected, sorted, counted and stored in a temperature controlled and hydrated environment prior to implantation. This promotes graft survival and improves their ability to regrow for better results.
After all grafts have been collected, the implantation site is prepped and local anesthetic is applied. The grafts will carefully and strategically be implanted by creating tiny openings for the grafts. This part of the procedure is very important as the angle, density and placement of each graft will determine how natural-looking the results will be.
After the Procedure
The average Elite Hair Graft procedure may take several hours, half day, or even a full day from start to finish. This depends, in part, on the number of grafts required to achieve desired results. All patients are required to make arrangements for someone to take them home safely.
You will be given comprehensive instructions on what to expect in the coming weeks and how to care for your newly transplanted hair. Most patients can return to work the following day and resume full activity, including their fitness and sports regimen, within a few short days. In most cases, evidence of the transplant goes undetected by others until months later when they notice your fuller, natural looking head of hair.
