Interest in dermatology and plastic surgery is at an all-time high, but stigma and misinformation still surround the industry and patient knowledge. Our aim is to provide you the information you need to make an informed decision that is right for your body with facts and evidence based science.
Getting fillers are not akin to getting a haircut
We hear it from experts every day, especially from bargain hunters looking to save money. The mantra is simple, get your shoes on sale but not your face! Having cosmetic fillers, are classified by the FDA as medical procedures using prescription products, and injections carry consequences far more serious than a botched trim. Always do your research and go to a reputable dermatology or plastic surgery office that has the appropriate credentials, received appropriate training, has multitude of experience on all skin types, and carries expertise necessary to manage complications, with a solid proven track record. Consequently, we are seeing a dramatic rise in both complications (from fillers, in particular) and plain, old bad work.
What’s the difference with the repertoire of fillers?
Fillers, which serve as place holders for depleted collagen and fat provide an immediate, short-term plumping effect due to filling in the dermis, along with long term changes including jumpstarting growth of your own collagen for longer-lasting fullness and lift, thus decelerating the aging process. Despite their chemical similarities, the most common hyaluronic acid (HA) group of fillers is actually a very diverse group. These 14 gels vary in density, viscosity (or flow), elasticity, lift-ability (or stiffness, what docs call “G prime”), and longevity — traits that shape their personalities and determine their role among fillers. Robust, buoyant fillers like Restylane Lyft and Juvéderm Voluma can help sculpt and define a jawline, or restore volume and projection to the cheeks while lifting up the lower face; whereas light, slippery, malleable HAs, like Juvéderm Volbella and Belotero Balance, are a better fit for, say, the barcode-like lines striating the delicate upper lip.
Depending on how a formula’s molecules are strung together, some HAs will break down faster or swell up more than others (and while that added oomph may benefit areas like the cheeks, nobody wants puffy under-eyes post-injection). Dermatologists and plastic surgeons take all of this into consideration when selecting the right product for you and harmonizing your natural features.
